Captcha on login

The bots are only gonna get worse at this point, I personally suggest putting a Captcha (preferably the kind that's just a checkbox)
on login, and forcing all of the user's to log out once. (To force the bots off)

I'd be more than willing to put up with a captcha if it meant there weren't gonna be 10k bot posts per hour.

Many things can be done. Approve registrations manually for example. Validate accounts by e-mail. Disable registrations on the Christmas holiday weekend. Make a rule that disables posting until a new user posts at the Introduction section. That should minimize a lot of the SPAM.

How long are administrators going to let spam bots thrash our forums? They are not giving the forums the attention it deserves.

SPAM bots will probably overrun the message boards by the time they bother to check up.

I think.... I killed all the bots. Also started banning IP's and re-implemented recaptcha on registration.

Yea it was rough. I had captcha enabled initially but it was causing issues with registration so I switched to Q&A. Hopefully this works now!

Thanks again, there was so much spam.

You can't prevent spam with "puzzle" restrictions on registration alone, because humans will just solve the captchas for the bot's account and let the bot do the rest. Even NES specific questions will not prevent human people who can google the answers letting bots post.

That's not to say, "Don't do it, it's not worth it." Just be aware, you only raise the barrier a little rather than totally prevent it.

Spam happens in every forum, whether you're around to see it or not. An additional puzzle question won't keep them all out, but I think it would help out a lot, because for every spammer who gets far enough to post, I'm pre-emptively banning two other spammer accounts with porn links listed in their account.

I've already informed RadJunk on what's going on, and I'm working on getting him to add a new moderator, so hopefully it gets better soon, but don't expect us to ever get to a point where there is never any spam. It's not going to happen.

How will the moderator be picked?

Well, I can't speak for the admin, but chances are we'll just be picking people who are reliable and have a good temperament, and who want the job.

Captcha was causing issues with registration again. Tried implementing a different solution, it was failing. I'm working on getting Captcha working properly.

Who are these people who keep having issues with registering on the forums, and are we sure they're not bots trying to turing test their way through?

I've have disabled reCaptcha for the time being after some testing but have implemented quite a few methods of defending against the never ending onslaught of spambots. I'll continue to monitor.
