How do you implement diagonal movement into an adventure module game?

This is my first time using NESMaker (however, as I'm to understand this would apply to most everybody as it is fairly new), and I want to implement (at least) semi-fluid feeling controls, which would imply that the player can move diagonally. I attempted to implement this by duplicating existing movement code files and adjusting them to move the player diagonally, but no matter how hard I try the built-in physics system don't seem to let me do this, without creating new physics on my own. That, I don't dare attempt 1. because I'm not familiar with assembly, and 2. I'm sure there must be some easier way of doing this. Can someone please help me? Also, if this is the wrong place to post this, can someone direct me to the correct section of this forum, and if this has already been asked, can someone direct me to that? Thank you very much for any help! :D

Have you tried this? http://nesmakers.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=622&p=3953

It was made a while ago and might be a bit out of date, but it may help.
