buggy melee

so I figured out how to implement melee attacks in the platformer but it's buggy as hell... there's a video of it in action in the fb group.

basically, there's the obvious delay, plus it doesn't always play the attack animation - also, it doesn't stop character from moving, so I could still be running along and swinging my Jose conseco bay at zombies run and gun style. ..

then there's the bounding box which can't be animated..
has anybody figured out a smoother or better way to pull this stuff off ?
