Hi guys and girls,

Just made A account for the forum. Still waiting to buy Nes Maker.
Looks like a top notch product for starting to create a NES game.

Reason why i did't buy it directly and still waiting is because my main computer is a mac.
And this is a result of working for A Apple service center. About 2 years now

Been working on Windows for all of my life and did some mac things on the side.
But now i working in the apple scene al my computer sort of been replaced by apples.

From what i seen Nes Maker comes with DRM and like most of the users DRM is most a hassle then a feature.
Not that I am against it, only my worry is that when i buy Nes maker after few years serves go down and you can't use this wonderful piece of software.

This happend to me when I used WiiGameMaker, I loved the software and made a few games, mostly test games for me and made one release also a proof of concept.
Now the software is completely useless to me not that mind that i payed for it i mind that i can't use it any more.
So I hope that when Nesmakers get discontinued it will removed license checking and let all of us use it until the end of time.
(don't hope that nesmaker ever gets discontinued but then again how long can you maintain a project like this just be realistic)
drm-warning-670x335.jpg

After this rant I will probably buy nes maker in a couple of weeks.
Just need to setup a dedicated pc for game creating, not a real problem.

Seen the youtube video's for creating the different type of games and my mind starte spinning.

I want to get back in to game creating. Now days i replaced al my retro game consoles with a everdrive type devices
tumblr_plkwb0agw91qk12kj_540.jpg

and would be sweet to run a homebrew game that i wrote on all of them. (don't need to be the same for all of them and most of them would have a nes emu by now.)

So, who is Dcnigma? well I am graphics designer by education and have a passion for hacking and creating things.
Did't a few project on my self and you can find most of my projects on my blog http://dcnigma.eu5.org Not all gaming related.
But most it is,  hahaha

Like Retro games from the 80's, find them the most fun probably because i am a 80's Kid.
Been a Sega Fan boy for all of my childhood years but now i own everything from 8bit Nintendo thill the Wii. (wiiu and switch are coming soon i guess)
But i got my nes from my brother last Xmas so i don't have a childhood memory with that system the Master System then again, i did :D

Tried a few things game related "click and play" was my first game creator i used to make a sort of a game.. (ok did basic and vgabasic way before that)
But never made anything good with basic that i would like to show to any other than my mom.
Now days i learned a few things not a PRO but can think like a programmer and programmed a few program's my self.
Like Visual Basic a lot, because I started programming in that when i was 13 when i was 16 i stopt programming and did't do it again until many years later.

I can ready a bit of C en C# thanks to Unity, ASM also but need to keep A eye on the reference tables.

Like how nesmaker let you edit script and change the ASM code with in, looks like a good learning tool to learn programming for NES.

So expect that I will ask a little help when i get the software :p
I really like what i have seen in the youtube video's but some of the comments in the form regarding the software made me unsure to buy it on impulse.
Gone setup a dev unit for nes, got a few ideas that i want to try.

I Did the Wii and PS3 (not game if i been honest a small picture slide show app.)
Made a few Rom hack of Sonic for Megadrive (first everdrive I got).
A few application nothing big a translate Half life arcade to english mostly.. 50% would say.

Wii Pong game that i madehttps://www.nintendomax.com/viewtopic.php?t=11147
Proof Of Concept, a two player game made with WiiGameMaker, that game maker got a very bad rep. back then one of the dislike was no 2 player support.
So thought of a clever way to play on one remote. up down and A and B for player two.

Here are a few screens of my sonic rom hack

Made also made a front end for emulators using this method, A rfid tag/game for loading that one game.
A simulator for Half life survivor so you can use a Rfid card again to save you progress on the game. (discontinued)

Or my blog shameless self promotion hahaha :D http://dcnigma.eu5.org

Sorry for my bad gramma don't speak natively English, I live in Belgium.
My main language is dutch and also that is not my best quality :p haha dyslectic is a b*tch.

Been in the scene for awhile the Dc is from Dreamcast and Nigma was one of my first nickname i used back in the day when i started using the internet.
(yes batman E-nigma aka the riddler just dropt the e.)
When i was active on dcemulation I added the dc to the nigma and became dcnigma, (also xboxnigma but that one i did't stick like the dc(good all days on xboxscene))
Been using the nick for sometime and maybe someone seen me haha.
I the DC scene i mostly made Covers for homebrew releases:
The xbox scene was all about mods. my old mods.
recent mods can be found on the main page. Xbox OG are perfect for arcade cabinets.

Here are some covers that i made most populair was the DC toxic and the one i seen most used is Nester DC back cover:
(did't make the front.)

Welcome DcNigma, what an introduction!

Glad to have you here with us, you will surely be a great help. ASM is a simple logic language, Joe (Granato from NESMaker) made some great tutorial, for coding ASM in NESMaker on youtube and Vimeo (search for nesmaker official channels)
And as you said, because all the code is opened, you can literally modify everything. So good for experiments some code/scripts... as a learning tool (I use it like that, since I discovered NESMaker last year)

About your MAC, you can use a VM (I use NESMaker with Win7 in a small VM, on my MAC everyday... I don't have any PC). It works perfectly. Don't hesitate, your will not regret! NESMaker is fabulous. I think the most mind-blowing is when you flash your game on a cart an play it on the real NES (mine is a PAL FR).

Agree with you, DRM is sh** but Joe would remove that protection if they discontinue the devs, it's just a small protection anti-trolls and to protect the project, the community.

Have fun :)

Thanks ;) I will :p

I have seen most of the youtube video's: Adventure tutorial twice. I have know about Nesmaker for awhile seen the Kickstarter started back then.
But only recently i got a spark to buy it. Little creative block i guess. gonna check Vimeo later ;-)and getting a nes helpt also...
-Seen the animation tutorial as well and some screen play of Redherring32 game Shadow: An Adventure In Monochrome.
good for inspiration. and creative way to load more color, Redherring32 game looks fun!

Like what i have seen so far its a stable building block for game creation tool.
And i guess you can come up with clever tricks/ways to make what you want to work with in you game.
Just need to be-creative, after seeing all example 20 min game creation videos from Joe.

I already thought of a game using multiple engines and would result in you rom swapping or in real live cartridge swapping.

At a key point in the game the game you would ask you to swap a cartridge and use a sort of level select map to load the correct level from that cartridge B.
After completing that part of the game you would use the start 2 screen to load the level select level and warp back to the game you where playing before.
Seen you can add custom control setups you could implement away that it only works if you press certain buttons.

-I guess it would not be that hard to implement two game mechanics in to one
but seeing the limited memory of nes games it would be a cool way to make a big game this way. Ali expres sells custom 8 bit repo's that are dead cheap. :geek:
And you would not be limited to one type of game. And having your game on 2 cartridge makes your game only more awesome-er then everybody else.
(8 year old logic It came one 2 cartridges so it most be good   )

Regarding the Mac issue,
Yeah i know i can use VM on my Mac but got some pc's laying around, and at the rate I reinstall my mac without backups,
Joe would get sick of me asking to renew my license, so I gone have a dedicated pc for game dev.
Guess a I5 16GB and 420gtx would do just fine for NesMakers. Just need to find a spot to place my dev-station.
And maybe a clean windows 10 install first. (inc runtime files i guess) I could try running it on my mac using PlayonMac.
Works fine for small programma's but don't think it would work at first try because of the compiler etc...
And have a mac mini with windows 7 but that is a dedicated virtual pinball machine now :p
