RPG demo

After playing around with NESmaker with the survival horror demo, I wanted to get started on what I truly want to make. Just seeing my main character move around on a plain screen is so exciting :D

Well, small Mario is 16x16 and he's as expressive as ever. In fact, I don't like big Mario sprite from the original SMB, I think they did a better job with it in Mario 3, but I prefer the original small Mario sprite to the SMB3 one. Maybe I'd tweak the palette to be about the same as it was in Donkey Kong (Blue hair and shirt instead of brown if I remember correctly), but that's about it.

Looked more at it and I'd adjust eyes a bit so they're a bit lower and only 1 pixel apart. Very good, otherwise!

Playing around with building the first rooms. Not sure what I think about the attempt at creating lighting effects and shadow in the main room.

hmm apparently (at least on my computer) it wants to autoplay at 144p instead of 240p. 240 is a lot clearer.

In any case, maybe tune down DRM a little. Like, still require putting down serial, but with one time activation (it won't require activation in future) and with unlimited amount of activations. Because I can guarantee that pirates will find way around it anyways and you'll only hurt legit customers who have to deal with this BS.

Hmm not sure. I have too many other things that i really want to make. Who knows though. If i get to a point where i can envision making it the way i want to fairly easily then maybe. I am happy that it seems like it is well received though! :)

Have been making some progress getting tiles etc together. Spent way too much time working on the paths for the trees but in the end I am reasonably happy with them and learned a lot about how to conceptualize how paths behave.

Might need to change it from 144 to 240 depending on what your Youtube is defaulting to: https://youtu.be/wsg6Sjjbb4M

Thanks! Yep, the tree canopy is paths. Got a little bonus/happy accident out of it: the little bushes are just single tiles of the tree path, which draws the very top peak of the path. One less tile to make!

A great character is always a good start :)

Edit: I missed the second page when I first looked at the thread. The indoor setting looks great.
