Army General Alabastard McDanielson sold his soul to the Devil for a mere night of pleasures. Now he must pay the Devils fee by fighting his own mutated Army within the Devil's den! The Devil has pity on Danielson and gifts him two rusty Luger P08's that often jam when running and gunning. Time the enemies' attack, stand still and take aim................. you will find that one slug will decimate an enemy foe!!! What will become of Danielsons' soul??? Find out by battling through two left to right side scrolling levels of pure hell! Download link for rom here: https://t-bone1.itch.io/bowels-of-the-beast

Big thanks to @Logana @LVintageNerd and @TakuikaNinja for supplying the soundtrack!!!

EDIT*- The game is complete now. Maybe if there are huge bugs I will try and fix. Has a start and end screen. It is complete!

Definitely needs some work, The story isn't really explained at all in game, you should probably make a cutscene or something, The levels aren't really distinct at all especially graphic wise, And since their is no hud you can never tell how many hits you have till you die, also the enemy's attack patterns are way and i mean way to sporatic and fast, also the level design for each of the levels more feels like an obstacle course then a well level, Maybe taking some inspiration on the level design of smb 3 and kirby would help but the main thing is that the levels are just kind of there, that brings me to the art, really its just confusing the entire game is on the black backgroud and there is no real detail in any of the graphics, definitely needs to be redone, really just looks like you crammed all the graphics for every stage into one tile set and just let that be, when you could have each stage be visually distinct with unique backgrounds and feels, i would suggest just redoing it all, similar with the level design, bugt the story and idea is still good, also minor nitpick is that the weapon dosen't really do anything when running, still an alright demo but just needs a fresh coat of paint and some new level design

@Logana It's a burner game man!!!! :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: I just edited in the playthrough. Watch that and tell me what you think. The HD is still processing so give it a couple minutes so you don't have to watch in 360p.

Kind a still feel the same way, I already played through the game, I'm not tryin to hate on the game I'm just stating some issues with it, Idk, critique is an important part of growth in any field, especially in game dev since its such an hard thing to do correctly

Well, the game has many issues indeed.
Music is good, sure but that's thanks to composers that.

As for the game itself and I am sorry if I sound bit too blunt in here.
It needs work. A lot of work. I can see that you are enthusiastic and that is always a good thing that but it needs a little bit of direction to get it right.

I'll try to break this down for you the best I can and while you don't need to listen to everything that I have to say, I hope you'll at least take couple of pointers with you.
Please understand, I don't do this to disencourage you, I do this because I sincerely care. If I didn't, I wouldn't be commenting at all.

1: Graphics.
Not everyone's an artist and that is understandable. Not everyone has talent for it either.
I do not know how interested or motivated you're in spriting but if improving feels difficult, ask help from others. There's no shame in it.

2: Stage design.
It's pretty haphazard at best to be honest. Right now you don't have much going on in there other than couple of gimmicks and quite honestly,
those gimmicks weren't really that good either. It just wasn't that interesting to play this game.

You need more of a solid plan to make the stage design good. What would be an interesting challenge for a player to accomplish for an example.
When player faces a new obstacle, is that obstacle fun and is there a fair challenge behind it?
Right now, enemies just jump in to your face for pretty much no reason.

If I were to suggest, try using Mega Man as an example when you design stages or mayhaps even do some practice stages with MegaMaker "Yes, it's a real thing that you can download for free, google it." to get a feel around what makes fun stage design and what doesn't.

3: Bullets
Quite honestly, it feels like I'm trying to defeat enemies with a spray bottle.
Distance for something I'm facing at is way too short and it gets even worse if I move in to a same direction at a same time.

4: Make the music justice
You've already got like 3 composers making music for you, you need to make those musics justice.
To understand the theme, what it's alike and build the world around that music so the both of them fits together.
You can't just have good music and some random stage around it. Both music and stage needs to complement each other. That is really important.
Typically composers make music around the stages but in this case, you'll have to make stages around music.
They put their heart and soul to it so it's just reasonable that you do the same. No pressure.

If you take all of this in to an account, I am sure that you'll be able to do something awesome.
I wish you a good luck with your project and if you have any questions or require help with something, do ask.

Cheers.

@Basty 1.Graphics: I am in the beginnings of reworking the graphics. It will probably be a good month and then some, long process. I'll admit I am not the best pixel artist.

2. Stage Design: It is what it is at the moment. But will for sure evolve as I make changes to the overall game. Different Monster types are on the list also.

3. Bullets: All General McDanielson can use is what the Devil places in his hands. I have had plans to change his weapon into a flame thrower. Right now one thing at a time. (y)

4. Have you even made your own game yet?

With NES maker? Nah. With other tools. Yes and there are couple of other projects I'm involved in at the moment but I can't reveal more about 'em at a moment.
In before you ask why I haven't gotten around learning NES maker, it's because tutorials are in video format and I have an attention span of a kitten.
Still waiting for proper help file to get an easier access to stuff I want to know about so I don't need to go through half an hour long videos.

@Basty I would love to see you playing this game. If you are feeling up to it post some gameplay footage!
Sure, I can do that.
Would you like it with commentary or without?

Not bad, starting to look much better. I like how you took some cues from the older kind of games that looks simple yet has those snippets of details around the blocky design.
Thanks!! I still have much room on my tiles to add the fine details. This was just the "primer" coat.

Game fix 8/31/21 - I uploaded a new rom. Fixed lava in Red Level1 and Green Level 2. Player won't get trapped in lava anymore. And some graphics touched up. Tweak, tweak, tweak!
