Have a thought on how NESmaker can be improved? We are a small team with limited means, but we'd love to hear your ideas!

Scrolling suggestion for platformers

Post by chronicleroflegends » Wed Nov 07, 2018 4:02 pm

Forgive me if this is the way it already works, but I am hoping to add scrolling to my game once it becomes available.

My game takes heavy inspiration from Metroid, and while the current screen transitions work all right, I really want to make the player feel less 'cramped' by letting the screen scroll with them.

The way I see that it works in Metroid is you can scroll left/right or up/down but never both at once. The world map is split into horizontal and vertical segments separated by teleport/transition.

I really hope to be able to set my game up this way as well.

My understanding is that horizontal scrolling will be implemented in 4.1, however it will not feature scrolling screen transitions. And it likely won't have vertical scrolling either. Hopefully at some point someone finds a way to make scrolling screen transitions a thing.

But if I'm not mistaken vertical scrolling is also planned? Just in a different module.
