Considering changing the name...

Just doing due diligence, making sure I am not using a name that has already been taken. Apparently there is mobile/flash game called Doodle Jump that also uses a hand-drawn/paper design.

Some new screenshots. I think I have perfected my hand-drawn and colored look...

Considering other paper types. Thought about the old penmanship paper with dotted lines too. I think wrinkled paper would be hard to pull off with the limitations of the palette.

I attempted a construction paper level but it wasn't turning out well so I scrapped it.

What??? there so many good shades of orange and blue and green for construction paper. They can be one screen bonus rooms! that way it wont blind the player long enough and they go back to white paper.

Yeah, but it is hard making it look like construction paper, usually ends up looking like large swaths of color with no definition.

Might give it another try though...

I like it but i think the monsters would work better as scribbles with angry eyes on them. i think the pencil and eraser would be better as NPCs, Otherwise, its very cool!

Oh man that is a great idea! Might have to test that out. I found that after I made the eraser and pencil I had a hard time thinking of other monsters to make. Because of my anticipated audience and design I don't plan on using NPCs but might find a way to implement the erasers and pencils for something else.

What I meant by npcs was more along the lines of the blocks from yoshis island that teach you how to play, Which could also be done using visuals, due to the audience and it would help th understand, especially due to the fact that most kids of its target demographic don’t know how to read. Just wanted to make my suggestion a little less vague.

Maybe a power up could be something that allows you to "doodle" on the "notebook paper" to create a platform that you can jump on. Would be really cool if the power ups were things that allowed you to change how you interact with the environment. Thinking stuff like Megaman's power ups.

I'm legit jealous of this art style/idea! It's sooo good!

Same! I had an idea with the same style, but had to change it because of this! It was called doodlequest and was a Zelda style game

That would be nice, but with my current skillset I don't think it is possible. Would require sprite replacement on the fly and whatnot.

For now, to keep things simple for my intended audience I am forgoing any form of power up. Players simply jump on enemies to kill them.

Although, I am keeping a running list of ideas like this for a possible sequel if I like how this one ends up.

Also if you need bosses/enemies , you could also take more inspiration from some other things your child draws, or you could take inspiration from how i or my brother drew people when we were kids, if you are intrested, ill show you pictures, my brother always drew people like spiders or potatos with long legs. but you would need to see them for your self because theyre hard to describe.

Here is a link to the latest demo for Doodle Land:

https://goo.gl/ox51aT

NOTES:
  1. This demo consists of 3 levels from 3 different worlds
  2. D-pad for movement & A button to jump
  3. Reach the notepad at the end of the level to move on
  4. There is no music our sound (still trying to figure out Famitracker)
  5. Levels are somewhat short. This is by design. Game is to remain simple for smaller children.
  6. There are no powerups. This is by design. Game is to remain simple for smaller children.
  7. The crayons do nothing. Just a collectable. Working on this.
  8. Currently this demo features 3 types of monsters:
    • Eraser - jump on them to destroy
    • Pencil - don't jump on them, they have been sharpened! (cannot kill)
    • Eraser Boss - Jump on him 3 times to destroy (needs animation improvements)

TO DO:
  1. Music & sound
  2. Add more monsters
  3. Add more worlds & levels (currently 3 worlds with 3 levels each)
  4. Find a use for crayons:
    • Plan was to create a bonus round based on number of crayons collected each level
    • Was able to warp to bonus round but unable to warp to next level from there
    • Bonus round has no knowledge of screen/level player came from or where they need to go

Please let me know what you guys think!
