I've played the demo, and it's looking good so far! I love the simplicity of the graphics and gameplay, especially the "hand-drawn" art-style.
(btw if you need music, let me know. I've already worked on "Fight of the Phoenix" and I'm willing to help more.)

Thanks! Might take you up on that offer...

Just pm me the details(no. of tracks/sfx) when you're ready, and I'll get working straight away!
(...Or don't if you'd rather do it yourself. It's your choice after all.)

Let me try and give it a shot this weekend and if my frustration peaks. I will shoot you a pm.

Hey n8 bit, if you need more enemies, you can take inspiration from my brother's old drawings from when he was in preschool (idk if its a usa thing or what, cuz not entierly sure where youre from, so) ! if your intrestred, ill show you some pics. theyre like little ovals with a bunch of lines for legs and circles for eyes.

Thanks for the offer, but I added a few more enemies over the last few days.

Can't wait to play the full version of this.....like, seriously, hurry up! ;)

I am glad your are excited for this! I pretty much have the Byte-Off demo complete. Just waiting on music from TakuikaNinja.

Once the demo is submitted for the Byte-Off I plan on taking a short break before completing the full game. The worst part about game development is that it takes away from my game playing time and I have a few games I want to catch up on.

Completing the full game should not take too much longer, just need to add a few more worlds/levels and some more bosses and it should be complete.

Yay! Congrats ahead of time on completing your demo. It's a good feeling! I know what you mean about being taken away from gaming. My buddies keep having to check in on me bc I haven't logged on to Steam in weeks lol

Bonus levels complete!

Find a torn piece of paper and it will warp you to the bonus level!

Tried to make the bonus level look like the paper is torn at the bottom. If you fall off the bonus level platforms you simply warp back to the level or if you make it to the top the notepad will warp you back as well.

Updated the crayon usage too:
Blue crayons grant invincibility (for a short time) when you collect 5 and the HUD crayon count resets every time you collect 5.
Red crayons are for points.

heres some ideas for a sequel:
no longer is it just paper, the main character, doodle, embarks on a new quest to help bring peace to other kingdoms in craftania (my name for the world doodle land takes place in) ala super mario 3! this land is full of crafts like card board, legos and clay, as well as paper. This time there is a new threat, known as the shreddarians from the planet offyce (play on office). they are a bunch of robots with only one goal: to eliminate all paper, and by extension, doodle (ala daleks from doctor who). the shreddarians have invaded craftania and doodle must embark on a quest to stop them. along the way, he will encounter enemies from the first game, along with new ones to fit the material each kingdom is made out of.
This sequel would be slightly more advanced and difficult than the first, that way this could help to give the children more challenge as they get older and are able to understand bigger concepts, such as npcs and puzzles, so it would grow with the children. it would be made to suit the age of the children that are 1 or 2 years older than when they first played, so made for children around 6 to 8.
what do you think?

I like the way you think! I tried to make assets that looked like cardboard and construction paper but scrapped (no pun intended!) the idea because of the NES palette limitations made it difficult to get the textures just right.
